Norman Albert Stead, of Annapolis MD, age 77, died peacefully on July 20th, 2008 at Anne Arundel Medical Center In Annapolis, Md.

Norman, was born on June 27th, 1931 in Brooklyn, NY , the 1std son of Albert and Amanda Stead. He served in the Korean War as a Medic. After his return from the War, he began his career working on highly sensitive projects for the National Security Agency. After 5 years, he took a position with the electronic division of the American Telegraph and Telephone Corporation. His career then led to thirty years, managing the Physics Lab at the US Naval academy, until his retirement in 2000.

Norman was known for his generosity, his indelible spirit, and wonderful sense of humor. He cherished his family and friends… no person was a stranger. His love of life and people was apparent in everything he did. He was an avid handball and racquetball player. He ran two JFK ultra marathons, (50 miles each), and proud to be competing with much younger midshipmen. He enjoyed flying his own plane for many years, and sharing his love of cooking with family and friends. He and his wife loved traveling abroad, including trips to China, Australia, Europe and to his family heritage in Newfoundland. Until recently he was a passionate reader whose interests ranged from the study of religion and meditation to conspiracy and espionage novels.

He was a founding member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Arnold, MD. He formerly served on the Church Council and sang in the Chancel Choir for many years.

He was a devoted husband and father, survived by his loving wife of forty-six years, Ingrid Stead, one son Christopher A Stead, of Pasadena, MD. one daughter Karen A. Nelson, of Crownsville MD., two grandchildren, Jessica N. Stead, and Shelby B. Nelson, and one great-grandson, Gavin C. Stead. Other family members include one brother, Herbert Stead of New York and two sisters, Alice Le Sueur of New York, and Isabelle Mourot of Louisiana and his Mother-in-law Olga Bremer of Bonn, Germany, and many nieces and nephews across the United States.

A private service for family will be held on Tuesday, July 22, at the Barranco and Sons Funeral Home in Severna Park. A memorial service for family and friends will be held, Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 10:00 am, at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 461 College Parkway, Arnold, Maryland, contributions may be made to the Cancer Institute of Washington Hospital Center, 106 Irving Street, NW, Washington, DC. 20010-2975
