Norman G. Owens, 96, a 10 year resident of West Palm Beach, Florida, died November 20, 2008 due to natural causes, after a lengthy illness.
He was born on May 9, 1912 in Detroit, Michigan and raised in Annapolis, Maryland. Past residences include in Baltimore, MD, Houston, TX, and West Palm Beach, FL.
He graduated from Annapolis High.
Norman and his brothers started and operated the Owens Yacht Company which became one of the most successful pleasure boat manufacturing in the world. Norman was a naval architect who designed both powerboats and sailboats. The Owens Cutter is one of his acclaimed designs, but he also designed in the 5.5 Meter Class and 2 Ton Class. He was also an avid sailor, winning many races over the years.
Mr. Owens was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lou and son, Norman, Jr. and brothers, Charles and William.
He is survived by one brother, Jack and one sister, Molly as well as his four children, Mitchell, Michael, and Claire, all of Annapolis and Mary Glynn of West Palm Beach; and twelve grandchildren.
A wake will be held at Annapolis Yacht Club on Friday, November 28 from 1-5 pm. A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, November 29th at 12 PM at
St. James' Parish, 5757 Solomons Island Road, Lothian, MD, 20711.
Interment will be in St. James' Parish Cemetery.
