Dr. Neill Cooper, Jr., Colonel, U.S. Army Retired, beloved husband for 51 years of Virginia Cooper. They are the parents of Stewart (Rebecca) Cooper and Catherine (William) Nellist. He was the loving grandfather of Duncan and Connor Cooper and Fiona Nellist.
Dr. Cooper was born in Burlington, Vermont to Neill and Erma Cooper. He is survived by his sister Jacqueline and was predeceased by his brother Donald.
Following his high school graduation in Plattsburgh, New York, he received his B.S. from Williams College, graduating cum laude. His medical degree was earned at the University of Michigan Medical School in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Dr. Cooper spent 20 years in the U.S. Army Medical Corps and 20 years in private practice in Annapolis. Important periods in his career included his orthopedic residency at Letterman General Hospital and Shriners Children's Hospital in San Francisco; his experience as Battalion Surgeon, 2nd Medium Tank Battalion, Baumholder, West Germany; and his stint as Chief of Orthopedic Surgery, 67th Evacuation Hospital, Qui Nhon, Vietnam.
Dr. Cooper had a great many hobbies, especially enjoying photography, computers, and movies. He also loved spending time with friends and family water skiing, wake boarding, and traveling in his motor home. Skilled with a chain saw, axe, and wedge, he continued the family tradition his father began that he passed on to his son and grandsons.
Loved ones include sisters-in-law Ann McDaniels, Sandra Schmunk, and Gladys Schmunk, and brothers-in-law Frank Moore, Edward McDaniels, Charles Schmunk, and Robert Schmunk (deceased). He was a beloved uncle to Glenda Hinkley, David Moore, Douglas Moore, Sarah Bainbridge, Tom McDaniels, Charles McDaniels, Susan Amick, Dana Schmunk, Betsy Schmunk, Daniel Southern, Philip Schmunk, and Kimberly Schmunk. His Canadian cousins are Mary Myles and Tom Myles (Wendy).
A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held on October 17 at 1:00 p.m. at Calvary United Methodist Church, 301 Rowe Blvd., Annapolis. The family will receive guests at 12:30, and a dessert reception will follow. Interment at Arlington National Cemetery will follow at a later date.
