Dr. Neal Albert Sondergaard, 74, of Severna Park, MD passed away suddenly at The University of Maryland Baltimore Washington Medical Center on January 12, 2024. He was born on March 20, 1949 in Schenectady, NY to George and Ann Sondergaard.

Neal graduated from Marist College and earned his PhD in physical chemistry from Brown University. He worked as a scientist for the Naval Research Lab where he earned many accolades for his research. Upon retirement he continued his work as a consultant for Syntek Technologies. Neal was a member of Sigma Xi, The American Society of Naval Engineers, and the IEEE. After his family and friends his true passion was travelling, allowing him to experience gourmet food and drink (his other loves) from around the world. Neal loved watching the Baltimore Ravens and spent many hours tinkering in his workshop.

Neal is survived by his wife of 46 years, Sally; their two children, Krista Schatz (Gavin) of Gambrills, MD and Brian Sondergaard, of Severna Park, MD; two grandchildren, Emery and Grady Schatz, of Gambrills, MD; and his sister, Anne Sondergaard (Lee Thomas), of Tuscaloosa, AL.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, January 19, 2024 at 10:00 am at Barranco Severna Park Funeral Home & Cremation Care, P.A. 495 Ritchie Hwy Severna Park, MD 21146. Interment at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or a charity of your choice.
