Nan J. Smith, resident of Charlestown Retirement Community in Catonsville and formerly of Kent Island and Severna Park, passed away suddenly at her home on November 14.

Nan was born on April 17, 1928, to Arthur J. Judge and Felexina Phelps Judge in Baltimore and was raised in Govans, MD. She graduated from Seton High School and Notre Dame of Maryland University and received a Master of Education from the University of Maryland.

Nan taught the third and fourth grades at Severna Park Elementary School from 1969-1989. She was greatly loved by her students and had a positive educational impact on generations of elementary school students. She was also an active member of St. Bernadette's Catholic Church in Severn, St. Andrew's by the Bay in Annapolis, and Our Lady of the Angels in Catonsville.

She enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren, gardening, walking, and was a member of two book clubs and a Catholic discussion group. In addition, she had a great fondness for the Shore on Long Point on the Severn River.

Nan is survived by her husband of 56 years, Brendan Smith, of Catonsville, sons Brian Smith of Odenton; Mark Smith of Crownsville, and Matthew Smith-Farrell of Princeton, NJ, and her 5 grandchildren Sean, Claire, Alana, Aveleen and Caileigh.

Family and friends my visit Barranco & Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Hwy, on Thursday, November 19 from 2-4:00 pm and 6-8:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, November 20, 2015 at 11:00 am in Our Lady of Angels Catholic Church, 711 Maiden Choice Lane, Catonsville, MD. Interment will be at 1:00 pm on November 20 in Crownsville Veterans Cemetery, 1122 Sunrise Beach Rd, Crownsville, MD.
