Milo E. Henstrand, Jr., 84, a resident of Severna Park, passed away surrounded by his family on April 10, 2018 at his home.  Milo was born on February 28, 1934 in National City, California Milo grew up in a Navy family and during his childhood lived at Navy bases in Florida, Washington State, Rhode Island, Maine, Texas and California.  He graduated from Hoover High School in San Diego, CA in 1951 and entered San Diego State University where he became a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity.  While there, Milo met the love of his life, Mary, in San Diego in 1952 and they were married on April 12, 1953.  The Korean War was on and, always a patriot, Milo decided to join the U.S. Air Force and served from 1953-1957, attaining the rank of Staff Seargent.  He was trained as a Traffic Analysis Analyst and served in various Air Force intelligence positions in San Antonio, TX, Washington, D.C., Suitland, MD and Arlington Hall, Virginia.  After the Air Force, Milo and Mary went home to San Diego to finish college and their daughter Terry was born in 1957.  In 1958 Milo left San Diego to take a job at the National Security Agency (NSA) and he and his family moved to Maryland, settling in Glen Burnie.  There they enjoyed a good life, great friends, and grew their family with their sons Bob and Jim coming along in 1965 and 1967, respectively.  In 1972, Milo moved his family into their home in Severna Park where they remained.  Milo and Mary had a great life and were blessed with so many great friends.  Their blessings continued with the arrival of their grandchildren whom they loved and enjoyed so very much.  Milo served 36 years at NSA during which his duties took him to the Philippines, Viet Nam, Korea, Japan, The United Kingdom, and Germany.  He retired from NSA in 1994, having served his country for over 40 years.

Milo was always quite an athelete.  In high school he was on the varsity football and basketball teams.  He also loved to play baseball and softball as a young man.  He was an excellent swimmer and, as a young man in San Diego before and after his Air Force service, he was a lifeguard at Ocean Beach and Mission Beach in San Diego.  He loved to water ski and he and his family spent many wonderful weekends enjoying their boat with friends during the 1960s and early 1970s.  When Bob and Jim were in Boys Scouts, he went on almost every camping, backpacking and canoeing trip and had a great time.  He picked up tennis, and later golf, and always enjoyed the time playing tennis and golf with his friends.  He played tennis until he was 79 years old!

Most importantly, Milo was was a dedicated and loving husband and father.  His family was always his first priority and his children and grandchildren are eternally grateful for all the gifts his love bestowed upon them.

He is survived by his brother, Melvin Henstrand of Gig Harbor, WA, his children, Teresa Hoke (née Henstrand)  of Tampa FL, Robert Henstrand of Severn, and James Henstrand of Severna Park; his grandchildren, MaryJean Kopakin (née Hoke) , and Jack, Anna, Zachary, and Gabriel Henstrand; great granddaughter, Avery Caroline Kopakin.

Family and friends may visit on Sunday, April, 15 2018 from 4-6 pm at Barranco & Sons, P.A. Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Hwy, in Severna Park, MD.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:00 AM at Our Lady of the Fields, 1070 Cecil Avenue, in Millersville on Monday, April 16, 2018. Interment will follow in Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville. Memorial Contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the Hospice of the Chesapeake, 90 Ritchie Hwy, Pasadena, MD 21122.
