Mildred M. Carbonar, a long time resident of Los Angeles, CA and also of Annapolis, died in her sleep at Anne Arundel Medical Center on July 5th. Known by the many who adopted her as "Nana," she would have celebrated her 101st birthday on July 23rd this year. Born in Avellino, Italy, she came to Philadelphia, PA at the age of six months. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Vincent, in 1957 and by her eldest son, Vincent A., in 1999.
She devoted her entire life to her faith, her family and her friends. Because of her zest for life and genuine love for the people she met, she was an inspirational role model to all whose lives she touched. Quick to laugh, she had a zest for life and a marvelous sense of humor. She loved Halloween and every year she would dress up and go out to "trick or treat." She made all her costumes and not even her own family knew what outfit she would concoct. She delighted her neighbors and family doing this for 93 consecutive years. She loved everyone and had a beautiful faith in Jesus, inspiring all of the lives that she touched.
Even though macular degeneration hindered her, she still worked enlarged cross word puzzles and tried to be abreast of what was going on in the world. Widowed at such a young age, she was employed most of her life. She retired after many years as a secretary for the General Electric Corporation in Philadelphia and when she relocated to California, she worked at various law firms as their hostess, greeting the people who came to the office and making them comfortable. She had a high energy level and wanted her life to have purpose. In her younger years, she loved being a part of her high school's champion basketball team. Later as a "mom," she managed to fit in being president of the PTA when her children were in school and also served as the chairman of the Fire Safety Commission of Philadelphia.
Nana is survived by her loving children, Thomas Carbonar and Carolann Marone as well as Vic Marone, whom she regarded as her other son. Her four grandchildren, whom she adored, are Karen Ballard, Lorrie M. Parrott (her husband, Jason), Lyn A. Marone and Whitman A. Carbonar. She also had five great grandchildren.
Visitation at Barranco & Sons, P.A. Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Hwy in Severna Park will take place on Wednesday, July 9 from 4 to 8 pm. The next day a Memorial Mass will be held at St. Andrews by the Bay Church, 701 College Parkway in Annapolis at 10 am. A reception will follow immediately after.
