Michael Leland Murphy died December 7, 2023 after a brief illness.

He was born on September 4, 1971 in Kolkata, India (known as Calcutta until 2001.) His father, Dennis, was serving in the United States Foreign Service at the time. Michael and his family went on to live in Saudi Arabia and Nepal before settling in Arlington, VA. There, Michael attended Saint Ann's Catholic School (Arlington) through 8th grade, and then attended Bishop Ireton High School in Alexandria. Michael graduated from the University of Virginia with a degree in Math and Central Washington University with a degree in accounting.

Michael had a lifelong calling to teaching and taught at Judge Memorial Catholic High School, DeMatha High School, McNamara High School, and the Chesterton Academy. He worked for a time at the United States Census Bureau and as a math tutor at Mathnasium in Annapolis, MD.

Michael was preceded in death by his father, Dennis Murphy.

Michael is survived by his mother Sarah [nee Blanchard]  Murphy and stepfather Steve Reilly of Cambria, California; his two brothers, Padraic Murphy (Peggy Amacker) of North Beach MD and Timothy Murphy of North Beach MD, and nephews Sean Murphy and Ethan Murphy of North Beach MD; his ex-wife Eileen [nee Shipley] Murphy; and an extensive group of friends that stretch across the nation.

The family would like to thank Father James Bors, Michael Bors and the Beer and Barron group for the love and care of Michael, and their support of his family. The family also give thanks the doctors, nurses and staff of the Cardiac Care Unit of John Hopkins Medical Center for their care of both Michael and his family.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Thursday, December 14, 2023 at 11 am in St. Andrew by the Bay Roman Catholic Church, 701 College Parkway, Annapolis, MD 21409. If you are unable to attend the Mass in person, you may view a live stream by clicking on this link.

A private interment will be held at Jesus the Good Shepherd Community Church Cemetery in Owings, MD.
