Michael "Mike" Rowe Murnane, 63, of Annapolis, MD departed this life on June 7th, 2021 engulfed by a circle of love and family at The Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Mike was born on June 25th, 1957 in Trenton, NJ to John Eugene Murnane Jr. and Elizabeth Downs Murnane. He is survived by his loving wife of 35 beautiful years, Jennifer Trem Murnane and loving daughter, Erin Caitlin Murnane, both of Annapolis, MD. He is predeceased by his wonderful son, David Michael Murnane, who he now joins in heaven.

Mike had four siblings, Capt. John Eugene Murnane III, M.D. (Debra) of Virginia Beach, VA, Timothy Downs Murnane, J.D. (Susan Neall) of Staunton, VA (formally Annapolis, MD), Elizabeth Murnane Galantich, M.B.A., J.D. (Peter, M.D.) of Newport News, VA, and Christopher Patrick Murnane, (Penelope) of Crofton, MD.

Mike graduated from Bishop Ireton High School, Class of '75, where he was a member of the Varsity football team and was best known as a fiery redhead, who wiped out a referee in the course of chasing down a strong right side sweep during the championship game. Mike attended James Madison University and years later, received his engineering degree. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1981 and graduated from the Nuclear Power Program. His first duty station was operating the nuclear power plants on the USS Carl Vinson and received the high honor, the Order of Magellan. One of Mike's favorite remembrances on the Vinson world tour was the "Tiger Cruise" where he was permitted to bring his father, Major John E. Murnane Jr., USAF retired, Princeton Class of '45 graduate, and Colonel Anthony Paul Dyserski, USAF retired, B17 and B29 World War II veterans, from Hawaii to San Diego. The most significant milestone of Mike's naval career was serving as best man for his future brother in law, Daniel Thomas Trem where he met his bride-to-be, Jennifer, sister to the groom. Mike served 6 years active duty and 22 years in the Naval Reserves. Mike was on 2 week activity duty in the Mediterranean when September 11th occurred. There, his ship became a wartime footing. Mike remained at sea for 47 days on the USS Emory Land loading tomahawk missiles on Naval attack vessels. Mike retired from the Navy as Senior Chief.

While contributing in the Naval Reserves, Mike began his career with the Department of Defense and was an integral part of the NAVSEA team for decades. He worked at the David Taylor Research Center (Annapolis lab) in the Environmental Quality Department. Mike also worked for the Virginia Class Program Office as a member of the design and delivery team for the first Virginia Class boats. Mike concluded his career with SEA 05V, Ford Class, Carrier Engineering Team and was able to see the USS Gerald Ford christened. Mike's hands-on practical experience (always the Senior Chief), amazingly positive attitude and big smile on his face will be tremendously missed by his teammates.

Mike loved coaching David and Erin. He became a supportive sideline Dad, following the teams at Archbishop Spalding and Broadneck High Schools and wrapping up as a tailgate father following Erin's spectacular academic and athletic career with Elon University, Division I women's lacrosse team.

Mike spent thousands of hours boating off of Bembe Beach, together with his brothers, towing the kid's with a flotilla of water skis, knee boards, wakeboards, tubes, etc. Mike loved barbecuing while surrounded by friends and family and always ensured ice cold beverages were at hand. He was an avid Ravens Fan and tailgate perfectionist. Mike, always the engineer, was the Murnane family fix it guy, who was never challenged by household disasters. Mike's love of his community brought him to the presidency of the Tanglewood community where he would pick up litter while clocking 15,000 steps a day. He loved camping, hiking, and white water rafting in the Shenandoah National Park area with his family and friends. Mike loved people and made many friends effortlessly. He is loved and will be missed by all.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, June 17th at St. John Neumann Church in Annapolis, 620 N Bestgate Road, Annapolis, MD, 21401. An interment will be held for close family and friends at St. Mary's Cemetery in Annapolis.
