Michael Avent

Michael Terry Avent, 60, a resident of Severna Park for 13 years, died of cancer June 24 at his home after a seven-week illness.

Born Oct. 30, 1944, in Oklahoma City, Mr. Avent was reared in southern California and lived in Agoura Hills, Calif., for 18 years. He earned a bachelor of science degree in business management from California State University, Northridge. He worked for Citi Financial in Baltimore.

Mr. Avent served in the Army from 1966 to 1967 in Vietnam with the 173rd Airborne Division.

He was a member of the Jaycees in California, serving as president of Las Virgenes Jaycees from 1982 to 1983. He also was a member of the International Chili Society for over 10 years, serving as a chili judge, master of ceremonies and chili contest organizer.

Among his interests were photography, golf and gardening. He planted over 1,000 annuals every year.

Surviving are his wife, Nancy Jane Avent, whom he married May 12, 1973; one daughter, Jennifer Avent, and one son, Michael J. Avent, both of Severna Park.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway, where funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Thursday. Burial will follow in Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville.
