Matthew Almes, 39, of Havre de Grace, formerly of Severna Park, passed away November 15, 2015, from apparent heart failure. Matt was a son, brother, partner, and friend.
Matt was born into an Army family on January 11, 1976, at Langley Air Force Base in Langley, VA. After a childhood in Virginia, southern Germany, and Pennsylvania, Matt attended Severna Park High School in Severna Park, MD, shining both academically and on the soccer and football team. After graduating, he matriculated at West Virginia University and Robert Stockton University in New Jersey, finishing his degree in environmental engineering. He stayed in New Jersey, working with the Camden County Health Department as a registered environmental health specialist specializing in dealing with hazardous materials recovery and removal. Of note, Matthew was a part of a special team from New Jersey responding to hazardous removal requirements in New Orleans as a result of Hurricane Katrina.
Matt eventually moved back to Maryland to work with the state Department of Environment as an Environmental and Radiation Inspector. Following in his father's footsteps, Matt was ultimately hired to work for the Anne Arundel County Public School system. Matt served as the environmental issues manager until his medical retirement in June, 2015. Matt was meticulous with his work, tirelessly ensuring that all staff and students could work and learn in safe surroundings.
Matthew is the son of LTC Edward Almes (US Army, Ret.) of Arnold, Maryland and the late Rebecca Wilson Almes, originally of St. Pauls, North Carolina. Matthew is survived by his sisters, Dawn Almes Wright of San Diego, California and Paige Almes Reynolds of Richmond, Virginia. Matthew is also survived by his long-time partner, Paul Weeks of Havre de Grace, Maryland, and Tank, his beloved English bulldog who has been with him for the last 13 years.
A memorial service will be held at the Barranco & Sons, P.A. Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Hwy, Severna Park, Maryland on Monday, November 23, 2015 at 1:00 PM.
