Maryann Bates, 75, residing in Arnold, Maryland passed away on July 27, 2023, from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Maryann was born December 11, 1947 in Baltimore, Maryland to Anthony and Trudy Chronowski. She attended Sacred Heart of Jesus School a block from her home on Foster Avenue. She then attended The Catholic High School of Baltimore and graduated in 1965 with 4 years of perfect attendance.
After high school, Maryann worked for the Baltimore Port Authority. She married Blaine Robert Bates II on December 2, 1967. She left the workforce in 1972 after the birth of her first child Amanda Lynn then relocated their family to Arnold, Maryland in 1974. She then gave birth to her second child Blaine Robert in 1976. Once the children were grown, Maryann started her own in-home daycare business called Mother's Day Out, which she successfully ran for 10 years.
Maryann loved her gardens and flowers and was always looking for the next place to plant. She had a real knack for gardening that often left many in awe of her success with indoor and outdoor plants. She enjoyed anything that had to do with the water including swimming, water skiing, crabbing, fishing, and boating to different places on the Chesapeake.
Maryann was a very active member in the Twin Harbors Community Association and was part of the Matinee Five that won a Women's International Bowling Congress world championship title in 1981.
Maryann enjoyed doing puzzles, reading, and supporting her hometown sporting teams including the Ravens and Orioles. She was fond of animals including all of her golden retrievers, grand dogs, and parakeets. She liked photography including pictures of wildlife, flowers, and of course her grandchildren whom she loved dearly. Maryann enjoyed playing games with her grandchildren and watching them perform in sporting and musical events. She valued and cherished the times she spent with her family and friends.
Maryann was predeceased by her father Anthony Chronowski, her mother Trudy Chronowski, and her grandson Samuel Welling. She is survived by husband Blaine Robert Bates II; daughter Amanda and husband Scott Welling and their son Benjamin and daughter Lily; son Blaine "Robert" and wife Penelope Santos Bates and their daughters Baylee and Wynne.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Maryann's life on Sunday, August 20, 2023 from 1-3pm & 5-7pm at the Barranco Severna Park Funeral Home & Cremation Care, P.A., 495 Ritchie Hwy, Severna Park, MD 21146.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to Hospice of The Chesapeake or The Robert Packard Center for ALS Research at Johns Hopkins.
