IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Mary C.
Stevens
August 5, 1921 – June 25, 2018
Mary Catherine Mantheiy Stevens, 96, former resident of Hagerstown, MD for 34 years, passed away early Monday morning, June 25 th , at her daughter's home in Severna Park, MD with her daughter and son-in-law at her side.
She was born in Ridgeley, WV to Gregory and Elizabeth Mantheiy on August 5, 1921. In her early life, she lived in Cumberland, MD, Buffalo and Brooklyn, NY, and spent a great deal of time in Hagerstown as well since that was the home of her maternal grandparents. It was there that she met Matthew B. Stevens, and on September 2, 1940, the "girl from New York" as it said in her announcement in the newspaper, left Brooklyn and married Matt at an early morning Labor Day Mass at St. Mary's in Hagerstown. They lived a short time in Hagerstown before Matt found work at the Washington Navy Yard and they relocated to D.C. They lived in D.C. for a while before moving to the Maryland suburbs. They had 2 daughters, Mary Elizabeth and JoeAnn. Mary Catherine worked part-time at several department stores in the DC/Maryland area, but was mostly a homemaker. In 1979, after Matt retired and her mother needed her help, they moved back to Hagerstown. There she was a member of St. Joseph's Church in Halfway.
Mary always had good neighbors where ever she lived, and enjoyed many friendships in Hagerstown. She was a caregiver to Matt when he developed cancer and died from it 25 years ago. Then, years later when she was in her late 80's to 90 years old, she took care of her oldest daughter, Mary Elizabeth, before she passed away.
After Matt passed on, she got a miniature schnauzer pup to keep her company. She had two schnauzer pups before she died and loved them both. Watching TV shows about pets was a favorite pastime along with watching cooking shows.
She was a loving, caring, generous woman and mother, and a Grandmother Extraordinaire! She loved all of her grandsons and granddaughters so much! As time went by her love multiplied many times over as they had children of their own for her to love.
Mary Catherine was very spiritual, watching the Mass almost everyday when she couldn't make it to church anymore and receiving Holy Communion from her dear friend Sr. Maureen from St. John's once a week. She had a great devotion to Our Lady especially as she appears on the Miraculous Medal.
She is survived by her daughter, JoeAnn Horne, of Severna Park; her four living grandchildren: Katherine Ann Trapani of Fairfield, PA, Robert Matthew Horne of Lutherville, MD, Carrie Elizabeth Wheeler of Crofton, MD, and Sara Leandra Horne of Baltimore, MD; great-grandchildren: Robert, Steven, and Michael Morris, Andy Rasmuson and Brandy Lynn Ruby, RJ and Sawyer Lee Horne, and Paul and Carter Wheeler; and by numerous great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Suzanne Marie VanDemark.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10am on Friday, June 29, 2018, at St. John the Evangelist, Severna Park, MD. There will be a small reception at the church followed at 2:15pm by a small graveside service at Rose Hill Cemetery in Hagerstown, MD.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to a Franciscan charity of your choice or to a local pet shelter or rescue center.
