Mary Jane Mentzell Schmitt, 86, of Arnold, died April 22 at Future Care-Chesapeake in Arnold of a cerebrovascular accident.

Born on Sept. 17, 1920, and raised on a farm in Marriottsville, Mrs. Schmitt weighed only 1.75 pounds when she was born. She worked at Crown Cork and Seal plastic plant in her younger years. She loved her pets, gardening and finding bargains at yard sales.

She belonged to the Order of Eastern Star Daughters of Job Chapter 074, Ladies Oriental Shrine Yak-Rem-Peh Court 32, Daughters of the Nile Zitta Temple 27 and Social Order of the Beauceant Assembly No. 245.

The widow of Charles E. Schmitt Sr., she is survived by her children, Elizabeth E. Wroten of Arnold, Charles E. Schmitt Jr. of New Windsor, Lemuel F. Schmitt of Baltimore and Mary J. Parks of Hayes, Va.; 13 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Viewing will be from 9 to 11 a.m. tomorrow at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway, followed by the service. Burial will be in Crestlawn Memorial Gardens in Marriottsville. Online condolences may be made to www.barrancofuneralhome.com
