IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Mary C.
Peroutka
April 18, 1947 – May 10, 2025
Mary Christine Peroutka, age 78, of Severn, Maryland, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 10, 2025 in Annapolis, Maryland.
Born to Anthony and Elizabeth Peroutka, Mary was the proud older sibling to Katherine Peroutka Szarko, Michael Peroutka, Stephen Peroutka, and Paul Peroutka. She was a pillar in her family, not only to her siblings but to many younger cousins as well. Much of Mary's compassion and nurturing started in her childhood home and carried with her throughout her life, touching all her knew her.
She graduated from Notre Dame Preparatory School and later attended undergraduate school at The College of Notre Dame of Maryland. Mary went on to graduate school in Chicago before returning to Maryland to become a secondary English teacher in Baltimore County Public Schools. For over thirty years, Mary taught at various schools, including Golden Ring Middle School, Hereford High School, and Arbutus Middle School. Even upon retirement, she was compelled to continue her calling in education, working at Mt. Carmel School in Rhode Island and The Sisters Academy in Baltimore. She was not just a teacher, but a life-long learner, earning three master's degrees in counseling psychology, English literature, and divinity. Mary's passion for learning was one of her greatest gifts.
Mary deeply loved her husband, Gerard (Gerry) Klein, and they built a beautiful life together that took them from Anne Arundel County to Rhode Island and back. They both lived a life full of music, attending the symphony, singing at musical retreats in the Berkshires, and most importantly at St. John the Evangelist Church where Mary was in the choir and Gerry was the musical director. Mary also enjoyed reading; everyone who knew her knows that her happy place was in a cozy chair with a cup of tea and a good mystery novel.
Mary was proceeded in death by her husband, Gerry Klein, her father and mother, Anthony and Elizabeth Peroutka, and her brother Paul Peroutka. Mary is survived by four daughters, Kristin and Maureen Weisman and Kyra Klein Christenson and Kristin Klein, three son-in-laws, Brian Dunwoody, Josh Tornabene, and Blair Christensen, and three grandchildren, Madeline Weisman, Oscar Haines, and Blair Christensen Jr. She is also remembered by her many nieces and nephews including Annie Peroutka Parrell, Richard Peroutka, Gregory Szarko, Tina Szarko, Beth Peroutka, Patrick Peroutka, and Tim Peroutka and chosen daughter Natalie Valastro.
Mary will be remembered for her kind heart, her wise words, and her love of teaching.
