Mary Elizabeth Newnam Martin, born February 23, 1926, in Baltimore, Maryland to Leland Verna and Edna Irene Newnam passed gently into Jesus's arms on July 3, 2016. Mary was the beloved wife of James Martin Sr.( died July 26, 1976) and mother of Alice Lawrie Gardner and James Martin, Jr. ; grandmother to Noel Leslie Wagner, Jessica Lynne Gardner, Russell James Martin and Shannon Elizabeth Martin and great –grandmother to Adalyn Grace Wagner. Mary also had four sisters, Margaret Himmer (decd), Doris LeGourd (decd), Irene Kovanda-Knoll, Inez Brengle and one brother, Robert Newnam.
Mary was raised in Baltimore and upon marrying her husband she lived there and then moved to Pennsylvania for a short time and then returned to Severna Park, MD which is where she raised her family. Later she lived in Millersville and then finally in Arnold where she was a resident at Future Care of the Chesapeake. Mary, a homemaker most of her adult life, also worked at Hoopers Mill in Baltimore as a young woman before marrying her husband. Later she worked as the hostess for McDonald's in Annapolis, MD. She loved to cook and entertain her family and she was most happy when surrounded by family and friends. She was a faithful church member of Christ Our Anchor Presbyterian Church in Annapolis, MD for the past 10 years and in her younger years she was active in Hampden United Methodist Church in Baltimore, MD. She was a loving and caring mother and grandmother to her children, grandchildren and great-granddaughter and spent many hours with them at family events. She also loved her pets and was especially fond of dachshunds. Wherever Mary went she made friends and most knew her as "Peter Pan" as she loved to say that she was the Mary Martin in the original movie. She had a great sense of humor and always had a smile on her face and a kind word to say to all. Mary will certainly be missed by all of those whose life she has touched.
There will be a memorial service to celebrate her life at Christ Our Anchor Presbyterian Church located at 1281 Green Holly Drive in Annapolis, Maryland on Saturday, July 9th at 11am.
