IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Martha M.
Cohen
September 12, 1940 – April 29, 2025
Martha Mulliken Cohen was born on September 12, 1940, to Albert D. Mulliken, Jr. and Elizabeth M. Mulliken in Chicago, Illinois. She spent her childhood in Chicago, and Gary, Indiana. In high school, she was a highly engaged student at Mt. Lebanon High School in Pennsylvania. Many lifelong friendships were born during that time, especially with fellow majorettes in the Rockettes, Girl Scouts, and the Leaders Club. In 1958, she headed to University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana, where she enjoyed many activities on campus, most notably Kappa Alpha Theta. In 1960, while on spring break with her sorority sisters, she met another Illini and the love of her life David M. Cohen. They courted throughout her remaining years in college and married the day they graduated in January 1962.
Marty and David moved a number of times as a young couple and then as a young family. They enjoyed living in Pittsburgh, PA, the Bronx, NY, Chevy Chase, MD and Old Greenwich, CT before settling along the Severn River in Severna Park, MD in 1979. Marty raised her beloved children in Ben Oaks and thoroughly enjoyed the Garden Club, many community committees, and served as president of the board. As a realtor specializing in Severna Park, she especially loved selling homes to wonderful new neighbors and friends. She and David learned to sail on the Severn and spent many Sunday afternoon's racing with the Round Bay Sailing Association, of which they were founding members. She also loved to sail her little blue boat, Musica, and in later years she enjoyed kayaking all around the Severn.
Marty was a smart and independent spirit who enjoyed her family, poetry, gardening, twirling a baton (or cane), her many dogs, and being out on the water. She was politically minded and actively supported causes in which she believed strongly, such as equality, peace, and clean rivers.
Marty is survived by her loving husband, David, her daughter, Kristin Engleman (Vic) and her 3 grandsons, Nicholas, Scott, and Tyler Engleman. Her son, Joshua Cohen, her sister, Elizabeth (Betsy) Trickey and her parents predeceased her.
