Marlene Rita Ryan (Cwiek), age 88, passed away peacefully, surrounded by the family she devoted her life to. She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, and friend whose kindness, generosity, and unwavering courage shaped the lives of everyone who knew her.

Marlene is survived by her daughter Jacqueline; her sons Jim Jr. and Rob; her daughter-in-law Beth; and her beloved grandchildren Alan, Shannon, Claire, Phillip, Matthew, and Stephen. She also leaves behind her sister Jackie and brother-in-law Nelson, 22 nieces and nephews along with extended family and lifelong friends who will forever hold her memory close.

Marlene shared a deep and enduring partnership with her husband, Jim Ryan, who preceded her in death. Their marriage was a cornerstone of her life, defined by devotion, mutual strength, and a bond that carried their family through every season. His passing was a profound loss, yet Marlene continued forward with remarkable courage, honoring his memory through the love and stability she maintained for their children and grandchildren.

Marlene was a woman of remarkable determination. She faced every challenge with courage and a steady spirit, becoming a true force for her family. Her strength anchored those she loved, and her resilience inspired them. She created a home where everyone felt safe, supported, and deeply cared for.

In her early years, Marlene worked as a secretary in the public sector, where she was known for her professionalism, reliability, and presence. When she became a mother, she chose to stay home to raise her children, pouring her energy into creating a loving and stable home. Once her children were school-aged, she returned to the workforce as a guidance secretary, offering support and kindness to students and staff. She later worked for the Anne Arundel County Department of Inspection and Permits, where she remained until her retirement in 1992. Throughout her career, she was admired for her dedication, her work ethic, and her steady, compassionate nature.

Family was the heart of Marlene’s world. She loved gathering her loved ones around her table, cooking meals that brought comfort and connection, and hosting holiday celebrations that became treasured traditions. Her home was always open not only to family, but to their friends as well. She welcomed everyone with warmth, good food, and the kind of hospitality that made people feel instantly at home.

She delighted in preparing special family dishes, especially her cherished golumpkis and kruschickis, recipes that carried forward her heritage and filled her home with love. Cooking was one of her greatest joys, and she expressed her care through every meal she prepared.

Marlene also enjoyed collecting Hummels, bells, and Lenox pieces, each one a reflection of her appreciation for beauty, sentiment, and tradition. Her collections were lovingly displayed and became part of the story of her home.

Travelling with her husband Jim brought Marlene joy and adventure. She especially loved cruises, which offered her both relaxation and exploration. Her trip to Ireland remained one of her most treasured experiences, a journey she spoke of with pride and delight. She enjoyed visits to Lancaster, Pennsylvania for shows and entertainment, bus trips to explore the eastern coast and she cherished her week of peace and renewal in Ocean City, Maryland, a tradition that brought her comfort and happiness year after year.

Her life was defined by love, generosity, and a powerful strength that guided her family through every season. She created a home filled with laughter, warmth, and belonging, and her legacy lives on in the traditions she built and the memories she leaves behind.

Marlene will be missed beyond measure and remembered with deep and enduring love.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, August 18, 2026 at 10:30 am at St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church 689 Ritchie Highway, Severna Park, MD 21146

Celebration of Life for Marlene Ryan will be held on August 18, 2026 following the service. Location: The Atreeum at Soaring Timbers, 610 N. Bestgate Rd, Annapolis.

Inurnment Maryland Veterans Cemetery – Crownsville 1122 Sunrise Beach Road, Crownsville, MD 21032, Date and time to be determined.
