IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Marjorie A.
Joyce
January 11, 1922 – November 3, 2016
Marjorie Andras Joyce, well loved mother, grandmother and friend, passed away after a long illness at the age of 94 on November 3, 2016 in Baltimore, Maryland.
Born Marjorie Andras Gelston on January 11, 1922 to Henrietta Andras and George Gelston, she was the second of three children and resided in Cliffside Park, New Jersey. She obtained a Bachelor's degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and returned home to become a secretary in Manhattan in the new and mysterious industry of television. She worked at the Dumont Television Network, one of the three pioneering television networks along with NBC and CBS. She later worked for NBC at the time the Today show was beginning and remained a lifelong fan. Marrying John F. (Jack) Joyce, she moved to Albany, New York, and gave birth to three children, Jill, Jerril and Andrew Joyce.
After the family moved to Buffalo, New York, she reveled in the availability of the Buffalo Bills, the Buffalo Sabers, Lake Ontario, and the Southern Tier winter ski resorts. She attended the games, learned to sail on the lake in the summer and learned to ski in the winter. She became active in the school PTAs and developed fundraising events that existed for many years after she left. She also worked for the PTA at the state wide level. She chaperoned the high school ski club, carpooled many hours while her children were on the local swim teams, and learned to enjoy the Buffalo winters with all their snow. She ran for and was elected to a seat on the School Board. After divorcing her husband, she became Commander of the Niagara Sail and Power Squadron, a boating safety organization.
From her time in New York City, she developed a keen fashion sense and utilized it for the rest of her life. She was an excellent seamstress and made many of her own clothes in the early years of her marriage. She later made her daughters' prom dresses which they loved. She had a love of hats and all things nautical. She was generous, kind, industrious and civic minded. She traveled to diverse places including Europe, Egypt, Medjugorje, and cruises on the Mississippi.
After her son discovered the Chesapeake Bay with all its boating opportunities, and her daughters followed him to this area, she moved here, too, living in both Virginia and Maryland. She became active in the Annapolitans. She then moved to Asbury- Solomons Island, where she became involved in a newspaper drive to raise money for local charities, and took classes at St. Mary's College. Eventually she moved to Assisted Living Well in Millersville and we are grateful for the wonderful care she received from everyone there, and from her caregivers.
She was preceded into death by her parents, older brother George Gelston who died early at the age of 12, and younger sister Dorothy Gelston. She is survived by her daughters Jill and Jerril Joyce, son Andrew Joyce, daughter-in-law, Linda, grandchildren Victoria and Kelly, Gregory and Jeffrey, and by many friends who loved her.
