Marie Hernan
Marie Elizabeth Hernan, 74, of Abingdon in Harford County and formerly of Anne Arundel County, died Aug. 15 of cancer at the home of her daughter in Abingdon.
Born and raised in Youngstown, Ohio, Mrs. Hernan had lived in Crofton, Crownsville and Annapolis until moving to Abingdon in 1998.
She attended nursing school in Gadsden, Ala., and worked at Crownsville Hospital Center and later at psychiatric hospitals in the area.
She was a member of the Laurel Boys and Girls Club and was awarded a life-time membership in the Crofton County Club for saving the lives of two of its members.
She also held memberships in the Laurel, Waldorf and Beltsville volunteer fire departments.
A skilled poker player, she competed in a number of the World Series of Poker tournaments in Las Vegas, Nev. Another hobby was reading and maintaining an interest in political events.
Survivors include three daughters, Charlene Shephard of Severna Park, Marie Vasbinder of Abingdon and Suzanne Cook of St. Leonard in Calvert County; two sons, Patrick Jones of Burtonsville and David Joseph Jones of Raleigh, N.C.; one sister, Judith MacAuley of Annapolis; one brother, Daniel Hernan of Youngstown, Ohio; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
She was the mother of the late John Daniel Jones, who died in 1996, and the sister of Jeanne Landers, who died in 1997.
A memorial Mass will be offered at 10 a.m. tomorrow at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 689 Ritchie Highway, Severna Park. Burial is private.
Arrangements are by Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home.
