IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Margaret
Stieren
October 10, 1930 – February 28, 2021
Margaret Patricia Martha Stieren, known to family and friends as "Peg," passed away on Sunday, February 28, 2021 in Annapolis Maryland, where she had lived since 2018. Prior to her residence at Annapolitan Assisted Living, Peg lived in Severna Park, MD for 58 years. She was born October 10, 1930 in Baltimore, Maryland to the late Edith Catherine Lyston and James Lawrence Lyston. She graduated from the Institute of Notre Dame in 1948. Peg soon after met the love of her life, midshipman OB Stieren (USNA Class of 1951). They were married in Monterrey, California on April 19, 1952, and then began raising a family.
OB died an untimely death in 1975 from a heart attack, after suffering a stroke about a year earlier. Peg's faith and loyalty never wavered. She was an active member of St. John the Evangelist Church and School in Severna Park for over 50 years. During that time, her children attended school there, she led many summers of vacation bible school, was president of the Friendship Club, which she started, and in later years served as a Eucharistic Minister to nursing home residents. Peg was a devoted wife and mother to her family. Her children and grandchildren were well aware of what a blessing she was. After OB's death she began a career at the State of Maryland Comptroller's Office and worked there for 20 years until her retirement.
Peg was very active in retired life and continued her life of service. She enjoyed traveling, dancing, eating crabs in the summer and more than anything, spending time with her family/children, grandchildren and many friends. She was a beautiful, graceful dancer, having taken ballet from a young age until her move to California and marriage. Everyone who knew Peg loved her. She was a kind, gentle spirit to everyone she met – quite a role model for those she leaves behind.
Peg was preceded in death by her husband Oliver Bernard Stieren, formerly of Harlan, Kentucky. She is survived by her five children; Patti and husband Mike Valeika of Severna Park, Susan and husband Tom Bennington of Annapolis, Bill Stieren of Glen Burnie, Margie and husband Barry Boyd of Annapolis and David and wife Tricia Stieren of Ponce Inlet, Florida; 10 grandchildren - Michael Valeika (Laura) and Juli Wildey (Trey); Margie Westholm (Alex), Tommy (Meagan) and Timmy Bennington; Molly Musgrave (Ryan) and Andrew Boyd; and Clark, Wade and Noll Stieren. As of January 2021, two great grandchildren, Rose Elliott Bennington and Layla Sofija Valeika, joined the family. Peg is also survived by her sister and nephew, Nancy and Jimmy Keenan.
A funeral Mass will be held at St. John's in Severna Park on Saturday, April 24 at 10am. To the family's disappointment, due to ongoing COVID-19 restrictions, there will be no visitation or gathering after the service. A private burial will follow.
