Margaret "Peggy" Murphy of Great Falls, Va. passed away August 1 after a long illness. She was 88.

Margaret was born in Montclair, N.J., on Dec. 30, 1926. She was raised in New York City and, along with her sister Patricia, attended Riverside School. She married George Eugene Murphy in 1949. Dr. Murphy had a long career as a medical doctor in New Jersey and New York before he passed away in 1985. Margaret and her husband raised their four children in New Jersey, first in Upper Montclair, then in Glen Ridge and Saddle River. During that time she was active in the Junior League and particularly devoted to the art and history of the region, having served as a volunteer at the Montclair Art Museum and The Hermitage in Bergen County. Upon her husband's death she relocated to Washington, D.C., and later Great Falls, Va., where she served as a docent at the Sackler Gallery in Washington, D.C. She also worked at Equifax in McLean, Va. In addition to her sister, Patricia Washburn of Mandeville, La., Margaret is survived by her two daughters, Patricia Murphy of Atlanta, Ga., and Joan Murphy of Severna Park, Md., and her son, John Murphy of Great Falls, Va. Her oldest son, George Nicholas Murphy, preceded her in death in 1995. Margaret is also survived by three grandchildren, Alison Stock of Atlanta, Ga., Ann Stock of Washington, D.C., and Aidan Byrd of Severna Park.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 15 at Barranco & Sons, P.A. Severna Park Funeral Home in Severna Park, Md. In lieu of flowers, friends and family may send contributions in her name to the Alzheimer's Association of Northern Virginia.
