Madeline Overholser

Madeline M. Wingo Overholser, 78, a resident of Severna Park for 49 years, died of breast cancer on her birthday at her home.

Mrs. Overholser was born April 15, 1929, in Philadelphia, Pa., the daughter of the late Archibald and Madeline Wingo, and previously lived in Levittown, Pa., and Willingboro, N.J., before moving to Severna Park. She attended John Bartran High School in Philadelphia, and worked at Jefferson Hospital in patient care until she married John Harold Overholser of Philadelphia in 1952 and began raising a family.

She was a style consultant and window decorator at Robinson's Women's Shop in Severna Park. Her artistic nature developed into a second career as a folk art painter. She sold her decorative work at craft shows and country craft stores throughout Maryland. Her mural painting of the Baltimore & Annapolis Trail still gives pleasure today to many who see it as part of the counter at the Severna Flowers florist shop at Dawson's Corner shopping center, her family said.

She spent time as a volunteer teaching the handicapped to read and helping with Meals on Wheels. She loved all things artistic, from playing the piano, the arts, music, painting, decorating and arranging. She enjoyed travel and entertaining family and friends. She was a member of Our Lady of the Fields Catholic Church in Millersville.

In addition to her husband, surviving are three sons, William Overholser of Pasadena, John Overholser of Severna Park and Paul Overholser of Honolulu; and her sister, Maude Cowardin of Richmond, Va.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway. A Mass of the Resurrection will be said at 10 a.m. Friday at Our Lady of the Fields Catholic Church, 1070 Cecil Ave. South, Millersville. Burial will be in Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville.
