Lorraine May Cogan was born in New London, Connecticut, May 1928 to Mr. and Mrs. John A. Moriconi. She graduated from St. James School in Manchester, Connecticut and Mount Saint Joseph Academy, West Hartford, Connecticut. She was employed with the Aetna Insurance company in Hartford until 1949, when she entered the Service from Hartford Recruiting Office and completed her Boot Camp Training at Great Lakes, Illinois. She was the 5th company to graduate as a regular part of the U.S. Navy.
Lori was stationed overseas during the Korean War and Viet Nam War with the Hdqtrs, Commander in Chief of the Pacific, Honolulu, Hawaii. Staff, Hdqtrs, U.S. European Command, Paris, France, Staff, U.S. Naval War College, Newport R.I., Staff Hdqtrs, Third Naval District, New York City, New York, Staff Hdqtrs, Eleventh Naval District, San Diego, Staff, Recruit Training Command for Women, Bainbridge, Maryland, Staff, U.S. Naval Air Station, Corpus Christi, Texas, Staff U.S. Naval Station (Support Activity for Naval Academy), Annapolis, Maryland. While stationed at the Naval Station, Yeoman First Class Cogan was assigned as the Legal Secretary to the Legal Officer. In 1968, she was the first enlisted Navy woman to retire from the Naval Station after 20 years of Naval Service with honors, with the U.S. Naval Academy band playing at her retirement ceremony.
While stationed at Bainbridge, Maryland in 1964 she met Michael Cogan and was later married in San Diego, California.
Mrs. Cogan had many hobbies throughout her Naval Career as well as civilian. She was an avid Tennis player and Golfer and played in many Tournaments throughout the United States. She was a member with the International Women Veterans Golf Association, National Retired Military Classic, Annapolis Country Club Ladies Golf Association, Eisenhower Ladies Golf Association, Fort Meade Ladies Golf Association, and Maryland Suburban Women's Golf Association. She was a member of WAVES NATIONAL, Women of the Sea Services, U.S. Navy. She was also associated with the Fleet Reserve Club and the Elks Club of Annapolis, Maryland. She was a member and volunteer at the Arnold Senior Center in Arnold, Maryland where she attended aerobics classes and volunteered with singing and hosting scheduled Veterans holiday activities.
