Lena Belle Altman Clemmer-McGoury, 90, of Linstead in Severna Park, died May 11 at her home where she had lived for 51 years.

Born Sept. 8, 1913, in Johnsonville, S.C., Mrs. Clemmer-McGoury was the oldest daughter of the late Julius Spiers Altman and Lillie Belle Prosser.

She graduated from Winthrop University in Rock Hill, S.C., and received her master of education degree from the University of Maryland, College Park.

Mrs. Clemmer-McGoury and her husband, Monroe Burgin "John" Clemmer, moved to Linstead in 1953. They were married for 52 years before his death in 1989. She then married a longtime family friend, Thomas E. McGoury, who died in 2002.

The Clemmers were the founding family of Our Shepherd Lutheran Church in Severna Park. Among her many contributions to the church over the years, she started the church library and its first women's group.

She also was an educator, serving as chairman of the Severna Park High School business department from 1963 to 1976. She was president of the Anne Arundel County Retired Teachers Association, and started the Severna Park Branch of the American Association of University Women.

In addition, she was involved for more than 40 years with Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, an honorary society that promotes professional and personal growth of women educators and excellence in education.

Mrs. Clemmer-McGoury was a charter member of the local chapters and held local, state and national offices in Colonial Dames XVII Century. She also was an active member of the U.S. Daughters of 1812 and the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Surviving are her daughter, Monlen Anne Clemmer of Grosse Point Farms, Mich.; and three sisters, Willie Swenson of Clay Center, Kansas, Willa McCutchen of Johnsonville and Phontella Griffis of Titusville, Fla.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Our Shepherd Lutheran Church. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Morris Funeral Home in Hemingway, S.C., followed by a memorial service. Burial will be private.
