Leida A. Sastok, nee Narits, 86, a resident of Severna Park, died June 10, 2011 at Harbor Hospital.
Leida was born into poverty on April 12, 1925 in a small town in Tartu, Estonia. Her father died when she was 3 and her mother died when she 9. Leida lived with her grandmother until she died when Leida was 16. Leida worked on a farm when WW II began. While riding in a horse and wagon making a delivery, bombs haled around her. She jumped from the wagon and lay in the ditch until it was safe, never to return. She tried to keep in touch with her future husband by mailing letters to herself at his address, to let friends know she was safe. She married Endel Sastok July 24, 1925 while living in a displaced persons camp in Augsberg, Germany.
Leida lived the American Dream. In 1949 she and Endel landed in the United States in Hazelton Pennsylvania, sponsored by a Lutheran Church. They arrived with baby Jack in tow, the clothes on their backs and whatever else they could carry. They moved to Baltimore in the early 50's to improve their life style. In 1965 they purchased their third home in Randallstown and lived there for over 40 years. Leida survived Endel by 21 years. She was a homemaker and sewed for a family business. Her interests included camping, cooking, and traveling in her own motor home. She never borrowed money and always paid in cash. She loved to crochet and made 572 baby blankets which were donated to Project Linus.
Survivors include her son, Jack Sastok of Baltimore, and daughter-in law Judy Sastok, grandson Steve Hepburn and wife Dee Hepburn, great-grandson Austin, daughter Linda Sastok Amati of Severna Park, son-in-law Eric Amati, two grandsons Christopher and Kyle Amati.
