Larry Eugene South, age 83, of Annapolis, MD passed away on May 18, 2026 at Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis, Maryland.
He was born January 9, 1943 in Little Rock, Arkansas, the fourth of five children to the late Ezra and Minnie South.
Larry served his county in the United States Navy for 4 years, during the Vietnam War, and was honorably discharged as a Petty Officer Second Class. Upon completion of his active duty, he joined the Army Reserves, settled in Baltimore, Maryland, and began a career at the National Security Agency. His professional career in public service spanned more than three decades, and he continued to work in the field as a contractor for nearly two additional decades after his retirement from the Government. Larry was an avid ballroom dancer, traveler and art lover and favored cruising to enjoy all three. He was active in the Catholic Church and served numerous leadership roles within the Knights of Columbus.
Larry was preceded in death by his late wife, Jean South; sisters Rose Marie Hanks and Jeanette Strange, brother Jessie South and step-granddaughter Catherine Warner.
He is survived by his wife Jeanne Shawhan, son Joseph South of Bel Air, Maryland, daughter Katherine South of York, PA, step-daughters Jeanne Nichols of Sykesville, MD , Jackie Warner of Westminster, MD and step-sons John Shawhan of Knoxville, TN and David Shawhan of Annapolis, MD, brother Ronny South of Richmond, VA, as well as seven grandchildren, and four great grandchildren,
Family and friends may visit on Thursday June 18, 2026 from 2:00pm-4:00pm & 6:00pm-8:00pm at Barranco Severna Park Funeral Home & Cremation Care,P.A. 495 Ritchie Hwy Severna Park, MD 21146. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated on Friday June 19, 2026 at 11:00am at St Andrew by the Bay Catholic Church 701 College Parkway Annapolis, MD 21409. Interment Glen Haven Memorial Park Cemetery.
