Kevin McDermott, affectionately known as “Chief” to his grandson, passed away peacefully at home on January 4, 2026, at the age of 83. His family and friends were by his side, surrounding him with love.

Born on November 11, 1942, in County Roscommon, Ireland, Kevin immigrated to Baltimore in 1963, where he met his future wife, Mary. Together they built a life grounded in love, resilience, and Irish tradition, and they went on to have two children, Sheila and Kevin.

Family was at the center of Kevin’s life. He was the person you could call for help with anything, and he would show up without hesitation. He returned to Ireland often to stay connected with his extended family, keeping his roots close to his heart. You can take the boy out of Ireland, but you can’t take Ireland out of the boy.

Kevin spent much of his career with Teamsters and Local Union 570, working to ensure fair treatment and dignity for working men and women. He believed in honest labor and lived those principles every day.

Throughout his life, and even more so in retirement, Kevin liked to work with his hands and took pride in doing things himself — building, maintaining, and tackling whatever needed attention.

Kevin is survived by his sister, Bernadette Sherlock; his children, Kevin McDermott and Sheila Norris; his son‑in‑law, Lee Norris; his grandson, Connor Norris; and his dog Jack, whom he light‑heartedly referred to as “his poor dog Jack”; along with numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews around the world. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary, and his brother, Bernard.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations could be made to Hospice of the Chesapeake, whose compassionate care made it possible for Kevin to pass peacefully at home.

Family and friends may visit on Saturday January 17, 2026 from 12:00pm-2:00pm with a service to follow at 2:00pm at Barranco Severna Park Funeral Home & Cremation Care,P.A. 495 Ritchie Hwy Severna Park, MD 21146.
