Ryerson Kissam
June 23, 1955 – December 25, 2022
Kenneth Ryerson Kissam, age 67, passed away unexpectedly on December 25, 2022 after a brief battle with cancer. His devoted wife of 34 years, Karen, and their daughter Kathryn were at is his side when he passed.
Ken was born on June 23, 1955 in Princeton, WV, and spent much of his youth in the Midwest. He graduated from Shaumburg High School (IL) in 1973. He graduated from Concord College (WV) in 1977 with a major in history. While his passion was history, he turned to computer programming for a career. He worked at the Travelers in Hartford, CT (where he met Karen). After Ken and Karen relocated to Severna Park, MD, he held jobs at Riggs National Bank in DC and Maryland Casualty Company in Baltimore. He then began his most meaningful job as a stay at home dad for Kathryn.
Ken was an avid reader and lifelong learner. He surrounded himself with books on history, astronomy, geology, aviation, and his library is estimated at over 7500 books. Ken's primary focus was military history and he loved visiting civil war battlefields. He also enjoyed photography, maps, motorsports, country music, science fiction, and national parks. Ken was a member of Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church and spent many years teaching adult bible study. He loved understanding the historical context of Bible stories.
Ken is survived by his beloved wife, Karen, and his daughter Kathryn of Severna Park, MD. He is also survived by his mother, Nancy Moore of Charlotte NC, his sister Susan Rogers of Charlotte NC, and his brother David Kissam of Bedford VA. His father William Kissam passed away in 2015.
The Kissam family will be holding a service at Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church, 611 Baltimore Annapolis Blvd, Severna Park, MD, 21146 on Saturday, January 7 at 11:00am. The family requests donations to the America Battle Field Trust, the Cancer Research Institute or Woods Memorial Church in lieu of flowers. The family is asking for continued thoughts and prayers as they grieve.
