Kenneth Cowan

Kenneth Dean Cowan, 84, a resident of Severna Park, died of natural causes June 8 at Baltimore Washington Medical Center.

Mr. Cowan was born Feb. 21, 1924, in Marion, Ohio, and was raised in Lorain, Ohio. He attended evening classes at Johns Hopkins School of Engineering for nine years.

He worked as a mechanical engineer for Westinghouse, retiring after 40 years of service. He moved to Anne Arundel County in 1953.

Mr. Cowan served in the Navy in the South Pacific during World War II.

He enjoyed woodworking when he was younger, and genealogy and listening to Big Band and Jazz music.

He was preceded in death by his wife of over 50 years, Barbara Slocum Cowan, who died in 2003.

Survivors include two sons, Michael Cowan of Severna Park and James Cowan of Ellicott City; one daughter, Patricia Turcotte of Manchester, N.H.; one sister, Miriam McKay of Lorain, Ohio; and four grandchildren.

Family and friends may visit from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway.

Funeral services and interment will be held at 2:30 p.m. tomorrow at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery Chapel in Crownsville.
