Katherine Trettin

Katherine Harmer Trettin, 81. died July 22 at the home of her daughter, Kimberly Trettin Penoyar, in Arnold.

Mrs. Trettin was born July 4, 1924, in Raleigh, N.C., but grew up in Lansdowne, Pa. where she graduated from high school in 1942. She graduated from Ursinus College in Collegeville, Pa., in 1946 and earned varsity letters in hockey, basketball and tennis.

After graduation she taught health and physical education at Wallingford, Pa., High School. She moved to Maryland in 1948 after her marriage to Dr. Gene D. Trettin.

She taught at Dundalk High School and then became the first woman salesperson hired by the Baltimore office of the Reuben H. Donnelly Corp., publishers of the Yellow Pages. She later managed the medical offices of her husband in Severna Park and Annapolis and taught for three years at Annapolis High School.

Active in various civic and community organizations, she had been on the board of directors of the Severna Park Inprovement Association, the Severn River Swim Club and was a member of the Anne Arundel Medical Center Auxiliary.

She was a charter member of the Young Republican Club and of the Fort Severn Chapter of the Daughters of the American Republic. She also belonged to the Society of Mayflower Descendants in Maryland, the Severn School Athletic Council and was treasurer of the Dorado Hills Condominium Association.

She was a member of Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church where she taught a Sunday school class.

She was an avid lacrosse fan and enjoyed reading, knitting and working on the computer.

Survivors, in addition to her husband of 57 years and daughter, are another daughter, Kandace Trettin Chase of Severna Park; two sons, Andrew McAllister Trettin of Severna Park and Douglas Frederick Trettin of Atlanta, Ga; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of the Chesapeake, 445 Defense Highway, Annapolis, 21401.
