IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Katherine
Smith
January 1, 1919 – April 26, 2014
Katherine (Kitty) Lee Smith, nee Pollard of Severna Park Maryland passed away peacefully on April 26, 2014 at Brightview of Severna Park. She was born on New Year's Day, 1919 and was a lifelong resident of Maryland.
Kitty graduated from the University of Maryland in 1939 with degrees in Sociology and Psychology. She was a member of Alpha Omicron Pi sorority and was the alumna advisor of the College Park Chapter for many years.
In the early 1940's, she was a social case worker with the Baltimore Department of Welfare, where she served as a visiting home advisor. During World War II, she joined the Red Cross Home Service. After the war, Kitty was employed by the Maryland Department of Education, specializing in cases of delinquent and neglected children and worked closely with the juvenile court.
In 1947, she married Dr. James Brady Smith, whom she had known since high school. They settled in Anne Arundel County where she became immersed in Duplicate Bridge, eventually teaching classes and directing games in the Severna Park area. She was a certified Bridge director and Gold Life Master within the Bridge league.
Kitty was a direct descendent of President Andrew Jackson, and because of this, genealogy became her second hobby.
She was both a Charter and Life Member of the Chartwell Golf and Country Club. She and her husband built their final home on the edge of the golf course.
She was very interested in politics and became a member of the Severna Park Republican Women's Club.
Kitty was preceded in death by her husband in 2007. Surviving are three children: Dr. Nancy Barrett of San Francisco, CA, James Brady Smith, Jr. of Brookeville, MD and Kathleen Briggs of Centreville, MD; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Friends are invited to share a Life Remembrance at the Chartwell Golf and Country Club on Wednesday, May 14, 2014 from 2-4pm.
Memorial gifts may be made to the Hospice of the Chesapeake, 90 Ritchie Hwy, Pasadena, MD 21122.
