Katherine Johanna Smith (Holzmann) of Baltimore and Glen Burnie, died on September 19, 2025 at the age of 89. She was born on January 28, 1936 in Baltimore to the late Katherine Holzmann (Schweinsberg) and George Holzmann. She attended Southern High School in Federal Hill and graduated from Anne Arundel Community College in 1977 with a Human Service Degree.

Her working career began as a sales associate at Hutzler's Department store, she then changed to social services positions at North Arundel and Union Memorial hospitals. She volunteered with the American Cancer Society and founded the Cancer Resource and Support Center (CaRES) a non-profit organization to provide free support and educational services for cancer patients and their families. She later worked for the Anne Arundel County Health Department as a school health assistant at Broadneck High School.

Katherine was an avid gardener and lover of all birds (especially hummingbirds). She found great joy in planning and cultivating her gardens at her home. Her move to assisted living limited her to a few indoor plants but she maintained several bird feeders outside of her window which brought her immense happiness.

She enjoyed traveling and did many trips here and abroad with her daughter, close friends and even some solo trips with ElderHostel. She especially liked visiting Germany, her ancestral homeland, where her father resided in his later years.

She was a compassionate, caring person always willing to offer her assistance to others. She played a pivotal role in helping raise and care for her grandchildren Matthew and Nicole for which we are forever grateful. She was delighted when her granddaughter Jennifer returned to Maryland with her husband and 4 girls, after 20 years in South Dakota. She really enjoyed when the Marnette gang descended upon her home bringing food, fun, laughter and much love.

She is survived by her children Carl Smith, Michael Smith, Kathy Demchuk and her husband Steven; grandchildren Matthew, Nicole, Jennifer Marnette and her husband Phil; great granddaughters Brianna, Katrina, Haley and Maya.

Katherine was preceded in death by her husband Elmer "Bunky" Smith and her daughter Donna Smith.
