Katherine Irby Burton, 88, of Gibson Island, died June 28 at her home.
Born in Altavista, Va., Mrs. Burton graduated in 1938 from Jefferson Hospital School of Nursing in Roanoke Virginia,and then served in the Army as a nurse, stationed in Australia and the Philippines. She also worked at Johns Hopkins Hospital.
She was a member of the Gibson Island Club and was a former president of the Gibson Island Garden Club.
The widow of Dr. Wilbur D. Burton Jr., she is survived by two sons, Wilbur D. Burton III of Gibson Island and Thomas L. Burton of Stevensville; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway. A graveside service will be held at noon tomorrow at Culpeper National Cemetery in Virginia.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her name to the University of Maryland Dental School, 666 W. Baltimore St., Baltimore, MD 21201.
