Karol. Mom. Cousin Karol. Aunt Karol. Nana. An artist, a creator, a natural-foods maven, a sensitive and selfless day dreamer who was driven, first and foremost, by her motherly nature, but also by her faith in Jesus and her deep desire to connect with the beauty of God's world. Karol always felt stifled by traditions and expectations to do things the "usual way," so she just didn't. From the time she left her parents' home in Philadelphia to attend college in Puerto Rico, to her last moments in her physical body, Karol moved as she felt led.

Born on October 25, 1949, Karol was the only child of the unassuming Leon Robinson and the vivacious Jean Love Robinson. She was raised in Philadelphia and loved growing up with her first cousins Marilyn, George, Karen, Mark, and Cheryl, who were like siblings to her. Karol also had a true brother-from-another-mother in Louis, aka "Skip," Fouché. Karol graduated from Philadelphia High School for Girls where she was a Spanish language major. She spent her first two years of college at Interamerican University of Puerto Rico before transferring to Penn State where she later graduated. While living in Puerto Rico, Karol traveled to Costa Rica, Spain, and Morocco and was introduced to and fascinated by people and cultures from around the world. She developed a life-long love of Latin music, world music, international food, and dance. After living and working back home in Philly for a while, Karol moved to Atlanta, Georgia to attend Atlanta University where she earned a master's degree in educational psychology. In Atlanta, Karol met and married Donald Gray and they eventually settled back in Philadelphia. While the marriage did not last, the pair shared two daughters, Jina and Kaia.

In 1982, while living in Philadelphia with her daughters, Karol was introduced to Thomas Logan by her God Mother and Tom's Aunt, Phyllis Simms. Karol and Tom felt an immediate soul connection and got engaged seven days later. They were married the following year. Tom was the love of Karol's life, and they shared one daughter, Sherry, but together they had 5 children including Karol's stepchildren (Tom's children from a previous marriage), Tom Logan III and Lisa Logan. Tom and Karol raised Jina, Kaia, and Sherry together and while Karol had a few jobs over the years teaching and tutoring, her most defining roles in life were Mom and Wife. Tom's career as an Episcopal priest and then a Navy Chaplain took the family from state to state, and Karol always found joy in choosing and setting up a cozy home for her family. The Logan household, under Karol's management, was filled with kids and friends, music (salsa, Motown, or Gospel), pets (a cat, rabbits, fish, a dog), Karol's artwork, and a healthy—but not always popular—assortment of all-natural, organic foods and homeopathic remedies.

While living in Florida with her family, Karol had an encounter with God that elevated her faith—it became a new priority in her life, and she felt it was important for her to share what she was learning with her daughters and to encourage each of them in their own faith journeys. But Karol's motherly nature wasn't only reserved for her daughters. She supported, prayed for, mothered, and opened her home to other young people God placed in her life and to whom she became "Mom" or "Aunt Karol." Karol always expressed herself through art, and she shared her gifts with family and friends over the years. She mastered machine knitting, sewing, hand painting shirts, sculpting and reproducing dolls, crafting decorative boxes, and designing drawer organizers that she worked to patent. As her daughters grew up and left home, Karol explored her artistic gifts more. She eventually found a passion for painting—mostly people whose faces told stories that moved her. She took art classes to hone her talents and produced some stunning pieces. Karol's exceptional work as a doll artist was featured in Doll Crafter magazine and she was later recognized with an award for one of her original oil paintings at the Torpedo Factory Art Center in Virginia.

In 2011, Karol lost her beloved husband Tom and her mother Jean within two months of one another. Her father, Leon, had passed eight years earlier. Karol's relationship with Jesus sustained her though those losses, and she had peace knowing her loved ones were with Him. Karol's three daughters and their husbands blessed her with five granddaughters, and they became the center of her life. Nana, as her granddaughters called her, shared her love of art with each of them. They each have sweet memories painting, drawing, and sewing with Nana. Karol especially relished being a homeschool teacher to her granddaughter, Naiomi.

On Friday, September 29, 2023, Karol transitioned to her forever home in Heaven after a brief but hard-fought battle with an aggressive cancer. She spent her last days surrounded by her family and friends in her oldest daughter's home. While in the hospital, Karol spoke about the beautiful place God had prepared for her. Sensing that her daughters were worried about her one day, she told them with smile, "I'm going to be better than y'all will." And she is. She knew her eternal life would be more glorious than anything she could hope for on this earth.

Karol's warm presence as Mom and Nana is still felt by her daughters Jina, Kaia, and Sherry; her granddaughters Angel, Zoey, Naiomi, Mila, and Ayla; and her sons-in-law, Charles and Thomas. She will be missed by her first cousins, Marilyn, George, Karen, and Mark, her younger cousins, and her brother-from-another-mother, Louis. Her "adopted" children, "adopted" nieces, nephews, and grandsons, lifelong friends, new friends, and spiritual family will cherish her always.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, October 26, 2023 at 10am in The Cornerstone Church, 16010 Annapolis Rd., Bowie, MD 20715. A repast will follow from 11 am until 12:30 pm.
