Julia Marrero Brill was born on July 13, 1949 in Aberdeen, Maryland, and died peacefully in her home on June 14th, 2009 after a long courageous battle with cancer. She is survived by her husband, Richard H. Brill of Annapolis, Maryland and her two children, Cristina Marie Brill and husband David Sunderland of San Diego California
and Justin Marrero Brill and his fiancé, Shanna Rae VanDerwerker of New York City, two sisters, Jane Robinson of Carlisle, Pennsylvania and Judith Lee of Annapolis, Maryland, and her mother, Esther Marrero of Annapolis, Maryland.
Julia was the daughter of Lieutenant Colonel John G Marrero, and spent the majority of childhood living in a variety of places, including Japan and Puerto
Rico, as well as Virginia, Ohio, and Maryland. She was always a bright and intuitive person, as well as an extremely gifted musician. While living in Puerto Rico she was accepted into the prestigious Casals Music Conservatory to study the flute and piccolo. After high school she attended Wilson College, where she received a BA in Spanish in 1971. She then went on to teach Secondary Spanish and ESOL for York Pennsylvania City Schools for ten years from 1971-1981, and continued teaching TESL in Reisterstown to help non-English speaking adults obtain employment. She was a true humanitarian and a person dedicated to helping others reach their true potential, which is what led her to achieving her next career goal, receiving a J.D., from the University of Baltimore in 1983. She has been a member of the Maryland Bar and the Federal Motions Bar since1983. Her career accomplishments have been numerous, too many to describe in such a short space. She has worked in a variety of settings including private practice, hospitals, and universities. She has over 25 years of experience in risk management program design and implementation, healthcare reform, transactional and regulatory counsel on behalf of managed care, as well as large multi-system academic institutions. Most recently her career has focused on writing corporate contracts and material transfer agreements as the Compliance Manager for the Johns Hopkins University Office of Technology Transfer. Julia was Chair-elect of the Maryland Chapter of LES and a member of the Maryland Chapter Strategic Planning Committee, as well as an active member of AUTM. In the words of the President of LES, "I cannot overstate the role that Julia's energy, creativity, persistence, and sense of fun played in driving the Maryland Chapter's program forward." She was also immensely involved in working with local theatre groups including Children's Theatre of Annapolis, The Talent Machine Company, Annapolis Summer Garden Theatre, and Merely Players. She took on the role of board chairman, board member, production manager, costume designer, stage manager, public relations, even writer for a piece at The Mitchell Gallery at St. John's College.
Julia was an extremely devoted wife, mother, sister, daughter, and aunt. Everything she did was for those she loved, and lived every day to see their happiness. She enjoyed every moment as she experienced it, and literally danced through life. She has left a handprint on everyone's heart, and will be missed dearly.
