IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Judith H.
Sander
November 28, 1942 – August 24, 2017
Judith Haklik Sander of Severna Park MD died unexpectedly on Thursday 24-August-2017 at the age of 74.
Judy is survived by her husband, Ronald Sander; her children, Chris (Melissa), Matt (Julie) and Erik (Nancy); her grandchildren Ryan, Molly, Jack, Ben and Jadon; and her brother Jonnie. She is pre-deceased by her parents and brother Jan.
Born on 28-November-1942 in Staten Island, NY to John and Josephine Haklik, Judy grew up in Todt Hill, graduating from Staten Island Academy. After earning a Bachelor's Degree in Sociology from Wells College, she married Lt. Ronald Sander [USAF], her college sweetheart from nearby Cornell University, in 1964. After living briefly in Staten Island NY, and then Mountainview CA and Merrimac NH, Judy moved into Chartwell in Severna Park in 1972, where she would raise her family and spend the rest of her life.
Judy's joy in life was being a nurturing mother and wife. Raising 3 boys, Judy was always very involved in all of their extra-curricular activities…including Cub Scouts Den Mother, St. Andrews swim team president, tireless car-pool driver, and the Benfield Elementary PTA. She "sponsored" numerous midshipmen from the US Naval Academy, giving strangers a home away from home. Somehow, she also found the time to enjoy playing tennis with her friends, and spent many happy summers with her family at Litchfield Beach, SC, as well meeting her monthly "Lunch Bunch" friends.
As a life-long Francophile, which was undoubtedly fueled by her childhood family's annual vacations to Quebec, Judy became the founding French teacher at Chesapeake Academy in Arnold, where she developed the curriculum, taught, and ran the annual French Carnival for many years.
Judy liked to travel, joining her husband Ron on numerous trips to Europe, as well as to South Africa, Australia and Brazil, and enjoyed many cruises with friends and family. She would also travel nationally and abroad as part of the numerous art classes that she attended. A life-long patron of the arts, Judy truly appreciated, supported and studied the arts…musical, theatrical and painting.
Judy remained very involved in the community after her boys became adults. As a 40-year member of Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church, she sang in the choir and also served as a Deacon. She served as president of Friends of Annapolis Symphony Orchestra. Judy also led weekly book readings at Sunrise Senior Living.
Against overwhelming odds, Judy recovered from a near-fatal illness in 1999 and made the most of every moment over the next 18 years.
Nothing meant more to Judy than her family. She was an unconditionally devoted wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister and friend, and will be missed by all.
