Joyce "Joy" Virginia Sackett (nee Grant), mother, home-maker, volunteer, and long-time resident of Severna Park died from advanced Alzheimer's Disease at Sunrise Senior Care of Severna Park. She was 75 years old.

Mrs. Sackett was born in Severna Park on December 16, 1933 and was raised in West Baltimore, where her family moved during the Great Depression. After graduating from Western High School in 1951, she worked as a secretary for a trucking company and later for a furniture distribution company. She attended the Furniture Mart in Chicago several times.

In 1953 she converted to Catholicism. That same year she "re-met" her future husband, Walter, during a Labor Day weekend in Ocean City, MD. They had known each other as small children in the 1930's, but the families had grown apart, his to East Baltimore and hers to West Baltimore. They were married in 1957 at the old St. John's Church when it was still a mission church to St. Mary's of Annapolis. Following their marriage, they moved to an apartment at the corner of Maple and Water Street, where Creeden Hall stands today.

Joy was a librarian at St. John the Evangelist School for 25 years, where her children and grandchildren all graduated. She was also a volunteer for "Meals on Wheels," North Arundel Hospital, and the Severna Park Athletic Association. She was very supportive of her husband's coaching of 14-16 year-old, boys in baseball and the Severna Park Gold Diggers Girls Fast-Pitch Softball Team, keeping the score book for 26 years. Her home was always filled with boys. She said, "My two girls never knew any boy who wasn't a ball player, and so they both married "jocks." Her family was her life.

A Memorial visitation will be held on Friday 1-4pm at the Barranco and Sons P.A. Severna Park.
A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday 10am at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Interment will be private.

She is survived by her husband of 52 years, their 2 daughters, Mary Susan Lieb and Sally Ann Wagner, both of Arnold, and 4 grandchildren, Dusty, Dani, Abby, & Betsy.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hospice of the Chesapeake, 445 Defense Hwy., Annapolis, MD 21401.
