Joyce Gilman Hartman, 86, of Severna Park, MD, died peacefully at her Pasadena home on January 19, 2016, surrounded by her loving family. Her civic service was pioneering for her generation: Joyce chaired the Annapolis Fine Arts Festival in 1967, and in the same year was appointed by President Nixon to the inaugural Advisory Committee of the Kennedy Center, the opening of which she attended in 1971. She was also the first woman to serve on the Board of Directors at Chartwell Country Club in 1977, and later became the first female Liquor Board Inspector for Anne Arundel County.
Joyce was born April 13, 1929 in Detroit, MI, to the late Howard and Beatrice Gilman. She graduated from Johnson High School in North Andover, MA, and in 1951 received a nursing degree before joining Johns Hopkins Hospital.
Joyce was predeceased by her beloved husband of 59 years, Charles C. Hartman, Jr., and is survived by her four children and their families: Linda Hartman Denny; Michael Hartman and his wife, Cathy; Christian Hartman and his wife, Kathy; and Davidson Hartman and his wife, Gretchen; as well as by her ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
A Memorial Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 30th from 4-5 pm at Barranco & Sons, P.A. Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Hwy, Severna Park, with a Memorial Service to follow at 5-6 pm at the funeral home.
