Dr. Joseph Procaccini, 72, of Fells Point, Baltimore, Maryland, and professor in the graduate School of Education at Loyola University in Baltimore, Maryland, died Saturday, August 16, at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland of complications following heart surgery.

Dr. Procaccini was born in Providence, Rhode Island in 1942 and was the son of Angelo
Procaccini, a labor and union leader in Rhode Island, and Catherine Procaccini, a homemaker. Dr. Procaccini began his career teaching Latin and French at Bristol Senior High School in Bristol, Rhode Island. After receiving his PhD in Philosophy at Catholic University in Washington, DC, he became a member of the graduate education faculty at Loyola University in Baltimore, Maryland where he continued to teach for 41 years.

While at Loyola, he served as the Department Chair of the Education Department, as Director of Educational Leadership Programs and as Graduate Dean. He taught in the Sellinger School of Business and Management and was Director of the Center for Work,
Family and Schools. In addition, Dr. Procaccini authored 3 books, one of which, "Parent Burnout," received national recognition. He also authored many articles on school administration and family-school relations. He completed bioethics training at the Kennedy Institute of Ethics at Georgetown University, the Berman Institute of Bioethics at Johns Hopkins, and the Harvard Divinity School, and served as visiting research scholar in bioethics at the Weston Jesuit School of Theology, Episcopal Divinity School and Georgetown University. He spoke to professional and parents groups in 45 states and across Canada, Europe, and Australia, and appeared on over 100 local and national television and radio talk shows. He also served as a management consultant to schools, churches, hospitals, banks, nonprofit organizations and government agencies. Dr. Procaccini served on the boards of 5 private schools and numerous local and state boards, including the Anne Arundel County Planning Board and the Baltimore Regional council of governments. He traveled extensively visiting 20 foreign countries in Europe, Asia, and Latin America.

Dr. Procaccini leaves behind 2 sons, Gabriel Procaccini of Houston, Texas, and Marc Procaccini of Millersville, Maryland, 2 daughters-in-law, Maria and Lauren Procaccini, and 3 grandchildren, Sophia, Gianna, and Dominic. He was the brother of 2 sisters, Connie Procaccini of Cambridge, Massachusetts, and Catherine Procaccini of North Providence, Rhode Island, and he was also the loving friend of his former spouse, Mattie Procaccini, of Odenton, Maryland.

A Memorial Gathering will be held on Friday, August 22, at Barranco Funeral Home,
495 Ritchie Highway, Severna Park, MD 21146 from 3-5pm and 7-9pm. A funeral mass will be held at the Loyola Alumni Memorial Chapel on the grounds of Loyola University, 4501 North Charles Street, Baltimore, MD 21210 on Saturday, August 23 at 10:30am.
