Obituary

Listen to Obituary

Monday morning, at home in Severn Heights with his wife of 67 years, Emily, Joe McGeady, aged 88, peacefully passed while asleep, taking the next step of his journey, hopefully and  ultimately to meet his Creator, Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. As many know, for some time Joe was bravely fighting, but suffering from respiratory failure unrelated to the current pandemic.

Joe was a man of service in countless respects, sincerely interested in the needs and challenges of others over his own. Joe kept his friends and relatives close from the start. He was a jack-of-all-trades and master of some, too many to list here. He could and would strike up a conversation with anyone. Perhaps he was best known to friends and strangers alike as a purveyor of common sense and traditional values, and a gifted raconteur, with crafted segues and impeccable timing for the surprise punchline of a joke. But all should know that deep down, first and foremost, Joe was a good and loving husband and father, employer, provider, teacher, and volunteer. And a proud Grand Dad!

Joseph Kavanagh McGeady was born 1933 in Hagerstown, Maryland, son of the late Monica Straub & Manus E. McGeady. He was the 2 nd of four brothers, Eamonn, Glen, and Francis Xavier, all whom preceded Joe in death.  Growing up on 38 th Street in Waverly, he attended Blessed Sacrament School in Govans, and graduated Baltimore Polytechnic Institute in 1952. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1956, major in Business & Economics, from the University of Maryland in College Park. He learned about life early through the Depression and World War II, and later worked various jobs building the first harbor tunnel, running supplies at Maryland Shipbuilding & Dry-dock, driving a taxi all over Baltimore, and every job available at the Student Union in College Park.

At St. Mary's Govans in 1954 he wed his true love Emily Faye Schultz of Homeland, Baltimore. In 1956 the new family moved to Atlanta, Georgia where Joe joined the Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. he succeeded in sales as an agent. In 1961, he joined Minnesota Mining & Manufacturing (3M) in the Reflective Products Division, covering the southeast in the highway, railroad, and airline markets.

In 1968, Joe returned to Baltimore, joining his brothers Eamonn & Xavier taking up the management of marine construction firm, Martin G. Imbach, Inc., in Curtis Bay. Emily and kids followed in 1969 and the family settled for good in Severna Park. As Vice President & Treasurer, Joe worked with his brothers through thick and thin for 30 years, completing honest work throughout Baltimore harbor and across the Chesapeake Bay, providing hundreds of jobs for workers and their families, including his own. Joe was mentor to many, but his summons for a chalkboard talk in the Imbach office was never cause for glee.

Joe retired in 1998 to spend more time with Emily and the children, grandchildren, and not long thereafter his great grandchildren. Somehow he found time for his friends, volunteer work, and many hobbies and crafts. To name just a few hobbies: sailing, motorcycling, and flying. A few civic good works:  the Pride of Baltimore I & II, Baltimore Museum of Industry, Liberty Ship SS John W. Brown, Stella Maris - Apostleship of the Sea. Some volunteer pursuits: AARP Safe Driving Instructor, Senior Center Tour Bus Driver & Guide, and many ministries at his beloved parish St. John's in Severna Park, especially delivering casseroles to Our Daily Bread in Baltimore. Joe was a longtime member of the Sailing Club of the Chesapeake, and when his lungs still were strong he played 2 nd tuba for the Bay Winds orchestra in Annapolis.

In addition to his wife Emily, Joe is survived by seven children, thirty-six grandchildren, and 13 great grandchildren: Stuart and his daughters, Molly (Mike) Anderson, and Emily-Kate McGeady;  Marcia (Tom) Magette and their sons Christopher (Sarah) and Matthew (Meghan) Magette, and six great grandchildren;  Joe, Jr. (Marla) and their children, Babette (Samer) Pendleton-Mosis, Cy and Rosemary, Michael and Henry;  Monica (Mike) Ruppert and their children Melanie (Kyle) Murray,  Davey Joe, Emma (Matt) Siska. Simon, Timothy (Miki), Renee, Paul, Robert, James, Ben, and 3 great grandchildren;  Matt (Kim) and their children Logan, Emilia, Magdalene, and Matthew, Jr.;  Jennifer (Chris) Bushnell and their children, Cullen (Joseph) Sporleder, McGeady (Samantha), Xavier, Blaise (Alex) Benoit, Kavanagh-Faye, Synjon, Bonaventure, Maria Kekoa, and Keeldrum, and 4 great grandchildren; and Patrick (Courtney) and their sons Thomas, Joseph, and Charles. One of Joe's granddaughters died in infancy, Kenealy Reine Bushnell, may she rest in peace.
