Joseph Brennan

Joseph J. Brennan, 70, of Severna Park, died of lung cancer Oct. 28 at home after a four-year illness. He moved to Severna Park in 2004 after residing in Arnold for 30 years.

Born May 15, 1935 in Geneva, N.Y., and reared in Canandaigua, N.Y., Mr. Brennan previously resided in Buffalo and Syracuse, N.Y., before moving to Arnold. He graduated from Canandaigua Academy and received a bachelor's degree in business administration in accounting from Niagara University.

He retired from the Marriott Corp. in 1996 as the senior director of procurement, eastern area. Previously he worked for Loblaws Inc., beginning his career in 1953 as a grocery clerk and becoming the assistant vice president of sales before retiring in 1975. He was a past president of the Produce Marketing Association.

After his family, his first love was golf. He was a member of Bay Hills Country Club for 28 years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, McGiveney Chapter; charter member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians; and a member of the Annapolis Elks.

He served as a member of the board of directors for the Hospice of the Chesapeake, and was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Severna Park where he was an usher in the last few years.

He was a committed walker, and was recognized in the local malls for his friendly persona.

Surviving are his wife of 46 years, Mary L. Flanagan Brennan; two daughters, Mary Jo Jones of Odenton and Kathleen I. Browne of Arnold; two sons, Joseph J. Brennan of Arnold and Kevin M. Brennan of Millersville; and eight grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway, with services at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 689 Ritchie Highway, Severna Park. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Annapolis.
