Jon Walen Ogland, 92, a prominent radar scientist, died Nov. 4 at his home in Millersville after a lengthy illness.
Mr. Ogland was born Oct. 23, 1914, in Sandnes, Norway, and was the son of the late Olaf Johan and Marga Walen Ogland.
He studied electrical engineering at Norges Tekniske Hoyskole, a technical university, in Trondheim, Norway, graduating first in his class in 1937.
During the occupation of Norway by the Nazis in 1940, Mr. Ogland and his wife, Aagot Agnes Gyems-Onstad, were guided through the forest, eluding German patrols, to the Swedish frontier and from Stockholm were flown to England.
He was commissioned an officer in the Norwegian forces in exile and took part in the scientific development of the radar that helped in the Allied war effort.
After the war, he worked for Scandinavian Airlines and for an electrical development company in Norway. He was recruited by the former Westinghouse Electric Corp. to work at the company's center at the former Friendship Airport where he became a Fellow Engineer.
His expertise was in the development of radar and laser technology and guidance systems for which he held several patents. He retired after more than 30 years of service.
He was a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and was an active participant in Harundale Presbyterian Church before attending Anchor Baptist Church in Millersville.
He was also a member of the Anne Arundel County Police-Community Association and participated in the activities of the Norwegian-American community in Baltimore. His interests remained in science and technology, world affairs and local matters until his illness of many years.
Survivors include his son, Dr. Olaf Johan Ogland of Old Lyme, Conn.; one daughter, Aagot Marga Tucker of Arnold; and four grandchildren. His wife of 61 years died in 2001.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Harundale Presbyterian Church, 1020 Eastway, Glen Burnie. Burial is private.
