Ernest Lee "Johnny" Shifflett Jr., 81, of Arnold, died of heart failure June 23 at his home after a lengthy illness. Mr. Shifflett was born Sept. 17, 1923, in Charlotte, Va., and raised in the Elkton, Va., area. He served in the Army as a sergeant during World War II and was discharged in 1947.
He worked as a supervisor for the Swift and Co. meat packers in Baltimore. In the 1960s he drove coast to coast pulling house trailers with Morgan Drive Away Co. located in Elkridge. In the early 1970s he was a truck driver with Carolina Freight in Baltimore and then Preston Trucking Co. in Baltimore. After retiring as a truck driver from Teamsters Union Local 557 at age 65, he began driving senior citizens for the Arnold Senior Center until he was age 70. He was considered very family oriented and enjoyed fishing, boating and camping.
Surviving are his wife, Shirley Jean Conner Shifflett, whom he married in 1948; three daughters, Sandra Marshall of Arnold, Barbara
oudermilk of Litchfield, Ariz., and Wanda Seader of Glen Burnie; three sons, Mark Shifflett of Arnold, Duane Shifflett of Pasadena and Randy Shifflett of Severna Park; one sister, Margaret Bowman of Ellicott City; 16 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Visitation is from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today and tomorrow at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway, where services will be at 9:30 a.m. Monday. Burial will be in Glen Haven Memorial Park in Glen Burnie.
