John R. Whittaker, 79, of Millersville, died of lung cancer Sept. 8 at Glen Burnie Health and Rehabilitation Center after a five-year illness.

Mr. Whittaker was born May 19, 1926, in New Jersey, where he was reared.

He served in the Navy during World War II in the South Pacific and retired as a chief petty officer after 24 years of service. He then worked for R.S. Stern as a ship chandler, retiring again after 25 years employment.

A Boumi Temple Mason, he was a member of Lost in the 50s Car Club and enjoyed working on his 1958 Dodge automobile.

Surviving are his wife, Helen T. Hoffman Whittaker, whom he married in 1962; four daughters, Deborah Brown and Cynthia Kauffman, both of Glen Burnie, Jennifer McGratten of Knoxville, Tenn., and Laura Whittaker of Dundalk; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway in Severna Park, where funeral services will be held at noon Monday. Burial will follow in Glen Haven Memorial Park.
