John Padraic Walsh, who spent a lifetime serving his country, family and community, died early Saturday, April 29, 2017, at his home near Annapolis. He was 76.

A devoted husband, father and grandfather, Jack was a member of the Knights of Columbus and St. Andrew by the Bay Catholic Parish. He enjoyed attending any event that involved his grandchildren – or those of other family members or friends. If there was a hockey or lacrosse game, a dance recital or a play, chances were he was there.

Born March 15, 1941, in New York City, he attended Boston College and joined the Army at age 22. He served 14 years on active duty, including two combat tours in Vietnam, and was a member of both the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions. He earned the Combat Infantryman's Badge, the Bronze Star Medal and the Army Commendation Medal with one oak leaf cluster, along with other honors.

He left service as a captain in 1977 to attend law school at Georgetown University. After receiving his juris doctor, he began a second career as an antitrust attorney for telecommunications firms in New York.

In retirement, he moved to Maryland and served as a volunteer, including as a court-appointed advocate for vulnerable children through Anne Arundel County CASA.

He also was a competitive pistol shooter and a member of Anne Arundel Fish and Game Conservation Association.

His wife of nearly 40 years, Mary Jane Walsh, died in 2005.

He is survived by three children: John P. Walsh Jr. of Ocean Grove, N.J.; Deirdre Walsh and her husband Michael O'Connor of Falls Church, Va.; and James Walsh and his wife Sandra of Rockville; four grandchildren: Colin Walsh, Kyra Walsh, Shea Walsh and Maddie O'Connor; his sister-in-law, Margaret Hartley of Odenton; two nephews: Jonathan Hartley and his wife Susan of Severna Park, and Eric Hartley and his wife Kim of Norfolk, Va.; and two grand-nieces, Rachel Hartley and Kara Hartley.
