He is survived by his devoted wife of 55 years, Marie H. Toomey, sister, Regina Chew of South Bend, IN as well as five children and their spouses: John (Mary) Toomey of Raleigh, NC, Diane (Nick) Lambrow of Wilmington, DE, Laura (Tom) Long of Annapolis, MD, Brian (Lisa) Toomey of Annapolis, MD, Linda (Jeff) Kreis of Millersville, MD. John treasured his 12 grandchildren: Allison, Andrew, Ben, Bridget, Claire, Courtney, Macy, Meghan, Mitchell, Ryan, Sara and Shannon.

John was born in New York, NY on May 28, 1937. He attended LaSalle Military Academy where he developed lifelong friendships. He later attended College of the Holy Cross before graduating from the University of Florida with degrees in Biology, Chemistry, and Psychology. Following his graduation, he proudly served his country as a member of the National Guard.

He worked as a National Accounts Manager for over 30 years in the powder coatings industry. Upon retiring, John started his own business and was revered as "The Seat Surgeon" where he remained in constant demand. He enjoyed working with his hands, whether it was performing the magic of his trade, fixing an appliance, jewelry or his grandchildren's toys. He was "Mr. Fix It".

John was a great listener, storyteller and had a sharp wit enjoyed by all of his family and friends. He was truly the "life of the party." His passions included conservative politics, traveling, monthly book club, playing guitar and banjo, spending time with family and close friends and attending his grandchildren's events as a proud "Poppy".

A talented singer and musician, John played guitar and was a cantor for St. John the Evangelist Church in Severna Park. He was a member of the NRA, the Anne Arundel Fish and Game Association, Italian Business Men Club of Annapolis, and former Exalted Ruler of the Chicago Elks Lodge. A devout Catholic, he was an active member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church and past member of the school board.
