John Gilbert Steinkraus, "Gil", 90, a resident of Arnold, died on February 7, 2012 at the Tate Hospice House in Linthicum after a brief illness with cancer.
John was born on February 3, 1922 to Julia and Gustav Steinkraus and was married to Catherine May Steinkraus (nee Over) from June 2, 1945 until her death on April 11, 2011.
Mr. Steinkraus served for two years in the U.S. Army during WW II, stationed in Korea. He attended the University of Maryland under the G.I. Bill and earned his BS in Accounting. He worked for Ewell Motors, the I.R.S. and finally for the Naval Air Systems Command from which he retired in 1983.
Mr. Steinkraus was an active member of Asbury United Methodist Church for many years. He was an avid golfer and football and baseball fan, and enjoyed traveling with his wife.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Elmer W. Steinkraus (Jeanne). He is survived by his daughters, Linda K. Steinkraus Evans of Arnold, and Julie A. Smith (Terry) of Jefferson, OH; his five grandchildren, William W. Evans, III, Jeffrey F. Evans (Crystal), Steven J. Evans (Rebecca), Samantha L. Offenberg, and Lucas S. Smith; as well as, six great-grandchildren, Megan, Emily, Katelyn, Kayla, Victoria, and Tryden.
Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation on Thursday, February 9, 2012 from 2-4 and 6-8 at the Barranco & Sons, P.A. Severna Park Funeral Home and at Asbury United Methodist Church on Friday from 10:15-10:45am. A Funeral Service will follow at 11:00am, with the interment in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Asbury United Methodist Church, 78 Church Road Arnold, MD 21012.
