John Sloat

John B. Sloat, 83, of Severna Park, died Aug. 5 at Anne Arundel Medical Center of complications from an automobile accident July 16 on West McKenzie Road in Severna Park.

Mr. Sloat was born Feb. 28, 1923, in Peekskill, N.Y., and reared in Great Neck, N.Y., where he graduated from Great Neck High School. He had lived in Huntington Station, N.Y. for 51 years.

He served in the military during World War II in Europe as part of the 552nd Military Police Escort Guard Company for 20 months and later retired from Telephonics in Huntington Station where he worked as an electronics technician.

His interests included family and music. He was a member of Vigilant Engine and Hook and Ladder Company of Great Neck, N.Y., and West Hills Baptist Church in Huntington Station.

Surviving are one daughter, Debra L. Gordon of Severna Park; two sons, Scott Sloat of Cranberry Township, Pa., and Glen Sloat of Charleston, S.C.; one sister, Carolyn Karmer of Oakdale, N.Y.; and five grandchildren.

He married Shirley Harlow Webber Sloat in 1950 and she died in June 1986. He was the brother of the late Clark, Charles, Bill Sloat and Helen Richmond.

Visitation and funeral services will be held in New York. Burial will be Thursday in Calverton National Cemetery, Calverton, N.Y.
