John Joseph Shields, 72, of Severna Park, died at his home Sept. 2 after a lengthy illness.
Mr. Shields was born in Queens, N.Y., on Sept. 5, 1933. He was a paratrooper with the Army's 11th Airborne Division during the Korean War and was awarded a Bronze Star medal for his service.
He worked as a printer at the federal Bureau of Printing and Engraving in Washington, D.C., for many years, retiring in 1996.
He was a member of the St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Severna Park.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret Jayne Golden Shields of Severna Park; one son, Steven Shields of New Jersey; four daughters, Julie Marino of Florida, Madeline Shields of New Hampshire, Celeste DeConna of New Jersey and Tammy Wolanin of Maryland; one brother, William Shields of New York; three sisters, Eileen Hund and Marilyn Murray, both of New York, and Patricia McKeown of California; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was the brother of the late James Shields and the son of the late William and May Shields.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway. A funeral Mass will be said at noon tomorrow at St. John the Evangelist Church, 689 Ritchie Highway, Severna Park.
